The artist, who works under the pseudonym SERGE VALLBERG, grew up loving art, design and art history. Since 2016 he has worked on a number of highly textural series of paintings and began with a group of horizontal-vertical striped works, using up to four colors, amongst black and white. He combines the colors in order to get exciting and powerful results.
His paintings feature vertical lines of color with bulging nodes containing centers in contrasting colors. The paintings have multiple layers and passed through many stages of development. Working with layers, building them up and scraping back is an extraordinary process - bearing in mind that ca. 90% of this image will be permanently hidden by subsequent paint coverage.
The artist’s technique is tried, tested and versatile. He is using wide headed brushes and a squeegee, which is used to etch, scrap or smear the paint across the surface of the work. Manipulating the paint with a squeegee when the paint is very newly applied, hence its fluid character. The shapes in his works are contra-compositional - they stand out and demand attention. Looking at them from distance, his paintings appear as abstract photographs, suggesting an abstract sea.
Radiant colors and exceptional painting textures are the outstanding features of his series COSMIC METAMORPHOSIS and COSMIC EVOLUTION of 2016.
